This classic Apple Crumble recipe features a buttery, crumbly topping over a spiced, tender apple filling made with Granny Smith apples. Baked to golden perfection, it’s a comforting dessert perfect for any occasion, best served warm with a scoop of ice cream.

Ingredients

Crumb Topping

  • 1 cup all purpose flour
  • 3/4 cup brown sugar (light or dark)
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 8 tablespoons unsalted butter (melted)

Apple Filling

  • 2 ½ pounds Granny Smith apples (peeled, cored, and sliced or diced into bite sized pieces – about 6 to 7 cups)
  • ½ cup granulated sugar (or brown sugar)
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 2 tablespoons corn starch (or all purpose flour)
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Lightly grease or spray an 8 or 9-inch baking dish with nonstick cooking spray and set it aside.
  2. Make Crumble Topping Dry Mix: In a medium bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, brown sugar, salt, baking powder, and ground cinnamon until well combined.
  3. Add Butter to Topping: Pour in the melted butter and stir gently with a fork until the mixture becomes crumbly and evenly combined. Set this crumble topping aside.
  4. Prepare Apple Filling: In a large mixing bowl, combine the peeled, cored, and chopped Granny Smith apples with granulated sugar, lemon juice, cornstarch (or flour), salt, and cinnamon. Toss to coat the apples evenly and ensure the cornstarch is well distributed for thickening during baking.
  5. Assemble the Crumble: Transfer the apple filling mixture into the prepared baking dish, spreading it into an even layer. Then, sprinkle the crumble topping evenly over the apple layer, covering the surface completely.
  6. Bake: Place the baking dish in the preheated oven and bake for 35 to 45 minutes, or until the apple mixture is bubbling and the topping is golden brown and crisp.
  7. Cool and Serve: Remove from the oven and let the apple crumble cool for about 15 minutes before serving. Serve warm and optionally pair it with a scoop of vanilla ice cream for extra indulgence.

Notes

  • If you prefer a gluten-free option, substitute the all-purpose flour with a gluten-free flour blend.
  • Using Granny Smith apples adds a tart flavor that balances the sweetness of the topping; other tart apple varieties will also work.
  • You can prepare the crumble topping in advance and refrigerate it until ready to use.
  • For a nuttier topping, add chopped walnuts or pecans to the crumble mixture.
  • Make sure the apples are coated well with lemon juice to prevent browning before baking.
