Ingredients

Dry Ingredients

  • 2 ⅓ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 ½ cups cocoa powder (natural or Dutch-process)
  • ½ cup black cocoa powder
  • 1 ½ teaspoons baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon baking soda
  • ½ teaspoon sea salt
  • ½ cup sugar

Wet Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons canola oil
  • 2 cups unsweetened plant-based milk
  • 1 teaspoon apple cider vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • ¼ cup agave nectar

For Frying (optional)

  • 3 cups canola oil (if frying)

Spider Donut Glaze and Decoration

  • 3 cups powdered sugar
  • ⅓ cup cocoa powder
  • 3 tablespoons black cocoa powder
  • ½ cup unsweetened plant-based milk
  • 24 pretzels
  • 24 vegan candy googly eyes

Mummy Donut Glaze and Decoration

  • 3 cups powdered sugar
  • ¼ cup unsweetened plant-based milk
  • 1 ½ cups vegan cream cheese frosting
  • 24 vegan candy googly eyes

Instructions

  1. Mix Dry Ingredients: In a mixer, whisk together the all-purpose flour, cocoa powder, black cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and sea salt until evenly combined.
  2. Combine Wet Ingredients: Add canola oil, unsweetened plant-based milk, apple cider vinegar, vanilla extract, agave nectar, and sugar to the bowl of dry ingredients. Mix with the paddle attachment until the batter is smooth and well combined.
  3. Bake Donuts (Optional): Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Lightly grease a donut pan and fill each cavity with about ¼ cup of batter. Bake for 10-12 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Remove from oven and let cool.
  4. Fry Donuts (Optional): Heat 3 cups of canola oil in a Dutch oven or deep fryer to 350°F (175°C) using a frying thermometer. Use a donut dropper to carefully drop batter into hot oil in batches of 4-5 donuts, avoiding overcrowding. Fry each donut for 2-3 minutes per side until golden brown and cooked through. Transfer to a wire cooling rack placed over a baking pan to drain excess oil.
  5. Prepare Spider Donut Glaze: In a bowl, mix together powdered sugar, cocoa powder, black cocoa powder, and unsweetened plant-based milk until smooth and well combined to make the glaze.
  6. Glaze and Decorate Spider Donuts: Dip each donut in the glaze to coat and place on a wire rack to let excess drip off. While glaze is still tacky, press two vegan candy googly eyes onto the front of each donut. Break pretzels in half to make “legs.” Make small holes in the sides of the donuts with an ice pick or popsicle stick, then insert four pretzel legs on each side to create eight legs per spider donut.
  7. Prepare Mummy Donut Glaze: In a separate bowl, mix powdered sugar with unsweetened plant-based milk until smooth for the mummy glaze.
  8. Glaze and Decorate Mummy Donuts: Dip each donut in the mummy glaze and place on a wire rack to drip. While the glaze is still tacky, press two vegan candy googly eyes closely together on each donut near the top to form the mummy’s eyes.
  9. Pipe Cream Cheese Frosting: Once the glaze has fully set, fit a piping bag with a small flat tip and fill it with vegan cream cheese frosting. Pipe horizontal lines back and forth across each donut to mimic mummy bandages, being careful not to cover the candy eyes.

Notes

  • Donuts can be either baked or fried depending on your preference and equipment availability.
  • Make sure the oil temperature stays steady at 350°F (175°C) for frying to ensure even cooking and prevent greasiness.
  • Using an ice pick or similar tool to create holes for pretzel legs helps insert them cleanly without breaking the donut.
  • Allow glaze to become tacky before adding decorations to help them adhere properly.
  • Store decorated donuts in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days for best freshness.
