This Slow Cooker Chicken and Gravy recipe offers a comforting and flavorful meal with tender chicken breasts cooked low and slow in a creamy gravy. Perfect for a hands-off dinner, the dish combines simple pantry ingredients to create a rich sauce ideal for serving over rice, mashed potatoes, or noodles.

Ingredients

Chicken

  • 2 pounds boneless skinless chicken breasts

Gravy

  • 1.74 oz dry chicken gravy mix (two 0.87 oz packets)
  • 10.75 oz can cream of chicken soup
  • 1 1/2 cups water
  • 1/8 teaspoon black pepper

Thickening Mixture (optional)

  • 2 tablespoons water
  • 2 tablespoons cornstarch

Instructions

  1. Add Chicken: Place the boneless skinless chicken breasts in the slow cooker without pre-cooking or browning.
  2. Prepare Gravy Mixture: In a small bowl, whisk together the dry chicken gravy mix, cream of chicken soup, 1 1/2 cups water, and black pepper until smooth.
  3. Combine: Pour the gravy mixture evenly over the chicken breasts in the slow cooker.
  4. Cook: Cover and cook on low for 6 to 8 hours or on high for 4 hours until the chicken is fully cooked and tender.
  5. Shred Chicken: Using two forks, shred the chicken directly in the slow cooker to blend with the gravy.
  6. Thicken Gravy (if needed): If the gravy is too thin due to chicken juices or added vegetables, mix 2 tablespoons water with 2 tablespoons cornstarch until smooth. Stir this slurry into the slow cooker, cover again, and cook on high for 10 more minutes or until the gravy has thickened to your desired consistency.

Notes

  • Do not pre-cook or brown chicken before placing it in the slow cooker to save time and maintain moisture.
  • If you want a thicker gravy, use the cornstarch slurry step after shredding the chicken.
  • To enhance flavor, consider adding onions, garlic, or herbs during cooking.
  • This dish pairs well with mashed potatoes, rice, or egg noodles.
  • Leftovers can be refrigerated for up to 3 days or frozen for longer storage.
