Indulge in these French Onion Sausage Rolls, where savory sausage meets sweet, caramelized onions wrapped in flaky puff pastry. Perfect for parties or as a cozy snack, these rolls deliver rich flavors in every bite!

Ingredients

Ground Sausage:

  • 1 pound

Onions:

  • 2 large, thinly sliced

Olive Oil:

  • 2 tablespoons

Thyme:

  • 1 teaspoon fresh (or ½ teaspoon dried)

Salt and Pepper:

  • To taste

Puff Pastry:

  • 1 package (2 sheets, thawed)

Egg Wash:

  • 1 egg, beaten

Optional:

  • ½ cup grated Gruyère cheese, 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard

Instructions

  1. Caramelize the Onions: Heat olive oil in a skillet over medium heat. Add sliced onions and a pinch of salt. Cook slowly, stirring occasionally, until golden brown (about 15-20 minutes). Set aside to cool.
  2. Prepare the Filling: In a bowl, combine ground sausage, caramelized onions, thyme, salt, and pepper. If using, mix in cheese and mustard.
  3. Preheat the Oven: Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  4. Assemble the Rolls: Roll out puff pastry on a floured surface. Cut into rectangles (4×6 inches). Place a spoonful of filling on each rectangle, fold over, and seal edges with a fork. Brush tops with beaten egg.
  5. Bake: Place on the baking sheet and bake for 20-25 minutes until golden brown. Let cool slightly before serving.

Notes

  • For a vegetarian option, substitute sausage with a mix of sautéed mushrooms and lentils.
  • These rolls can be made ahead of time and frozen unbaked; just add extra baking time if cooking from frozen.
