Delightful Puff Pastry Apple Roses combine thinly sliced apples with flaky puff pastry, sweet strawberry jam, and a hint of lemon for a visually stunning and delicious dessert that is perfect for any occasion.

Ingredients

Puff Pastry Rose Base

  • 2 sheets puff pastry (thawed)

Filling and Topping

  • 3 apples (your choice, Pink Lady recommended)
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 3 tablespoons strawberry jam
  • 1 tablespoon water

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 375º F to prepare for baking the apple roses.
  2. Prepare Muffin Tin: Thoroughly spray the muffin tin with a non-stick spray to ensure the delicate roses do not stick during baking.
  3. Core and Slice Apples: Wash the apples, cut them in half, and carefully remove the cores using a melon baller or similar tool. Then, thinly slice the apples with the skin on.
  4. Soften Apple Slices: Place the apple slices in a bowl with lemon juice and enough water to cover them. Microwave on high for about 8 minutes until slices are pliable enough to bend without breaking.
  5. Drain and Dry: Drain the water from the apples and pat them dry thoroughly to remove excess moisture.
  6. Prepare Puff Pastry Strips: Slightly roll out each sheet of puff pastry. Cut each sheet into 6 strips along the short edge, working with one sheet at a time.
  7. Heat Jam Mixture: Combine the strawberry jam and water in a small bowl and microwave for 30 seconds to warm and loosen the jam for easier spreading.
  8. Spread Jam on Pastry: Using a spoon or brush, evenly spread the warmed jam mixture over each puff pastry strip.
  9. Arrange Apple Slices: Lay the softened apple slices along the top half of each pastry strip, overlapping them slightly for the rose effect.
  10. Roll the Pastry: Fold the lower half of the pastry strip over the apples, then carefully roll up the strip into a rose shape.
  11. Place in Muffin Tin: Set each rolled apple rose into the prepared muffin tin compartments.
  12. Bake: Bake in the preheated oven for approximately 40 minutes or until the puff pastry is golden brown and cooked through. The jam will bubble slightly during baking.
  13. Cool and Remove: Allow the apple roses to cool in the muffin tin for 5 minutes before loosening them carefully and transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.
  14. Decorate: When cooled, sprinkle with icing sugar or decorate with colorful sprinkles as desired.
  15. Serve and Enjoy: Enjoy your beautifully crafted Puff Pastry Apple Roses fresh for dessert or a special treat.

Notes

  • Use any variety of apples, but Pink Lady or similarly firm apples work best for maintaining shape.
  • Ensure the muffin tin is well greased to prevent sticking.
  • Do not overcook apple slices in the microwave; they need to be pliable, not mushy.
  • For a vegan version, confirm that your puff pastry contains no animal products.
  • Allow roses to cool completely before dusting with icing sugar to avoid melting.
  • Serve within a day for the best texture, as puff pastry can become soggy over time.
