Perfect for sharing at gatherings, this warm, cheesy bread pairs wonderfully with drinks and makes a crowd-pleasing starter.

Ingredients

Bread and Cheese

  • 1 round loaf sourdough bread (1 pound)
  • 1 pound Monterey Jack cheese, sliced

Butter Mixture

  • 1/2 cup butter, melted
  • 2 tablespoons lemon juice
  • 2 tablespoons Dijon mustard
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon celery salt

Optional

  • Minced fresh chives, for garnish

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven and Prepare Bread: Preheat your oven to 350°F. Take the sourdough loaf and cut it into 1-inch thick slices, cutting deep enough to almost reach the bottom but stopping about 1/2 inch from the base, ensuring the loaf stays intact. Then, make similar cuts in the opposite direction to create a crosshatch pattern.
  2. Insert Cheese: Carefully insert slices of Monterey Jack cheese into all the cuts you’ve made, ensuring the bread is adequately stuffed with cheese on all sides.
  3. Make Butter Mixture: In a bowl, mix together the melted butter, lemon juice, Dijon mustard, garlic powder, onion powder, and celery salt until well combined.
  4. Drizzle and Wrap: Drizzle the prepared butter mixture evenly all over the bread, allowing the flavors to soak in between the cuts. Next, wrap the entire loaf tightly in aluminum foil and place it on a baking sheet.
  5. Bake Covered: Bake the wrapped bread in the preheated oven for 20 minutes to allow the cheese to melt inside and the butter mixture to infuse the bread.
  6. Unwrap and Finish Baking: Remove the foil and continue baking the bread for an additional 10 minutes or until the cheese is fully melted and the top is slightly crisp.
  7. Garnish and Serve: If desired, sprinkle minced fresh chives over the top for a fresh, vibrant touch. Serve warm to enjoy the gooey cheese and flavorful bread.

Notes

  • For extra flavor, you can substitute Monterey Jack with mozzarella or a sharp cheddar.
  • Ensure not to cut all the way through the bread; leaving the base intact helps the loaf hold together during baking.
  • This bread is best served immediately while the cheese is hot and melty.
  • You can prepare the bread up to the butter mixture step in advance and bake just before serving.
  • Adding minced fresh chives or parsley adds a fresh herbal note and a pop of color.
