This Old School Homemade Oreos recipe brings a nostalgic twist to the classic cookie sandwich using a Devil’s Food cake mix base for soft, chocolaty cookies paired with a rich, creamy homemade frosting. Perfect for those who love the iconic Oreo flavor but want a homemade version that’s easier and fun to prepare.

Ingredients

Cookies

  • 2 eggs
  • 3/4 cup butter, room temperature
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 box Devil’s Food cake mix

Frosting

  • 8 oz. cream cheese, softened
  • 1/2 cup butter, softened
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 cups powdered sugar

Instructions

  1. Prepare the cookie dough: Beat the eggs, 3/4 cup room temperature butter, 1/2 teaspoon vanilla, and the entire box of Devil’s Food cake mix together using an electric mixer until fully combined and smooth.
  2. Preheat and shape: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Roll the dough into small balls about 1 to 2 tablespoons in size. If the dough is too soft to roll easily, chill it in the refrigerator for about 30 minutes to firm up.
  3. Bake the cookies: Place the rolled dough balls onto a baking sheet, spacing them evenly. Bake in the preheated oven for 8 minutes. Once baked, remove from oven and allow the cookies to cool completely on a wire rack.
  4. Make the frosting: In a mixing bowl, beat together softened cream cheese, 1/2 cup softened butter, 1 teaspoon vanilla extract, and 2 cups powdered sugar until light, fluffy, and smooth.
  5. Assemble the Oreos: Transfer the frosting into a plastic bag with a small corner cut off or use a pastry bag. Pipe a swirl of frosting onto the bottom side of one cookie, then gently press a second cookie of the same size on top to create your homemade Oreo sandwich.
  6. Storage: Store your homemade Oreos in the refrigerator to keep the cream cheese frosting fresh, or keep them on a cold porch if you live in a cooler climate like Minnesota.

Notes

  • Chilling the dough makes it easier to handle and roll into balls without sticking.
  • Ensure cookies are fully cooled before frosting to prevent melting.
  • You can use a piping bag or a plastic bag with a corner cut off to frost easily and neatly.
  • Store these cookies in the fridge due to the cream cheese in the frosting to maintain freshness and prevent spoilage.
  • For a firmer cookie, bake for an additional 1–2 minutes but be careful not to overbake as these cookies are meant to be softer.
