Classic Old Fashioned Oatmeal Raisin Cookies are chewy, flavorful treats packed with hearty rolled oats and sweet raisins. These homemade cookies combine a rich buttery dough with warm spices like nutmeg, creating a timeless dessert perfect for any occasion.

Ingredients

Dry Ingredients

  • 1 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon baking powder
  • ¼ teaspoon nutmeg

Wet Ingredients

  • 2 sticks butter (room temperature)
  • ½ teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup packed light brown sugar
  • ¾ cup sugar
  • 2 eggs

Add-ins

  • 3 cups old fashioned rolled oats
  • 1 ½ cups raisins
  • Cooking spray (for greasing pans)

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit and position the racks in the low and middle positions to ensure even baking.
  2. Prepare Cookie Sheets: Spray two cookie sheets generously with cooking spray to prevent sticking.
  3. Sift Dry Ingredients: In a medium bowl, sift together the all-purpose flour, salt, baking powder, and nutmeg. Set this mixture aside for later use.
  4. Cream Butter and Vanilla: In a large bowl, beat the room temperature butter and vanilla extract together until the mixture is creamy and smooth.
  5. Add Sugars: Gradually add the light brown sugar and granulated sugar to the butter mixture and beat on medium speed until fluffy, about 3 minutes.
  6. Incorporate Eggs: Add the eggs one at a time to the butter and sugar mixture, beating well after each addition to ensure a smooth batter.
  7. Add Dry Ingredients: Reduce the mixer speed to the slowest setting and slowly incorporate the sifted flour mixture. Mix just until combined to avoid overworking the dough.
  8. Fold in Oats and Raisins: Gently fold or beat in the rolled oats and raisins until evenly distributed throughout the dough.
  9. Shape Cookies: Using your hands or a cookie scoop, roll the dough into 2-inch balls, and arrange them on the prepared cookie sheets, allowing about 2 inches of space between each ball to accommodate spreading.
  10. Bake Cookies: Bake in the preheated oven for 20 to 25 minutes, or until the edges turn golden brown. Halfway through baking, rotate the cookie sheets from top to bottom and turn them from front to back to ensure even cooking.
  11. Cool Cookies: Remove the cookie sheets from the oven and place them on cooling racks. Allow the cookies to cool completely before transferring them off the sheets to keep their shape intact.

Notes

  • For chewier cookies, slightly underbake and allow to cool on the sheet.
  • Substitute raisins with dried cranberries or chopped nuts for variations.
  • Room temperature butter is crucial for achieving the right creamy texture in the dough.
  • Storage: Store cookies in an airtight container at room temperature for up to one week.
  • To freeze, bake the dough balls later or freeze baked cookies for up to 3 months.
