Classic Old-Fashioned Goulash is a hearty, comforting one-pot meal featuring ground beef, tender elbow macaroni, and a rich tomato sauce infused with Italian seasoning and Worcestershire sauce. This straightforward recipe is perfect for an easy, satisfying dinner with minimal cleanup.

Ingredients

Meat and Aromatics

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 small onion, chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced

Tomato Base

  • 1 can diced tomatoes (14.5 oz)
  • 1 can tomato sauce (15 oz)
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce

Seasonings

  • 1 tsp Italian seasoning
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper

Pasta

  • 2 cups elbow macaroni

Instructions

  1. Brown the Beef and Sauté Aromatics: In a large pot over medium-high heat, cook the ground beef along with the chopped onion and minced garlic until the beef is fully browned and the onions are soft. Drain off any excess fat to keep the dish from becoming greasy.
  2. Add Tomato Sauce and Seasonings: Stir in the diced tomatoes, tomato sauce, Worcestershire sauce, Italian seasoning, salt, and black pepper. Bring this mixture to a boil, ensuring all ingredients are well combined and the flavors start to meld.
  3. Cook the Pasta: Add the elbow macaroni to the boiling sauce. Reduce the heat to low, cover the pot, and let it simmer for 12 to 15 minutes. Stir occasionally to prevent the pasta from sticking to the bottom of the pot, and cook until the pasta is tender and the sauce has thickened nicely.

Notes

  • For a richer flavor, consider adding a pinch of smoked paprika or red pepper flakes for a bit of heat.
  • If you prefer a thicker sauce, you can let the goulash simmer uncovered for a few additional minutes after the pasta is cooked.
  • This recipe can be customized by adding diced bell peppers or mushrooms with the onions if desired.
  • Leftovers refrigerate well and reheat easily on the stovetop or microwave.
