This Maple Apple Crisp is a warm and comforting dessert combining sweet and tart apples coated in a fragrant maple-spiced mixture, topped with a buttery oat crumble. Perfectly baked to a golden crisp, it’s an easy crowd-pleaser for fall or any time you crave a cozy homemade treat.

Ingredients

Apple Mixture

  • 8 medium apples (thinly sliced; use 4 sweet apples like Honeycrisp or Pink Lady and 4 tart apples like Granny Smith)
  • 1/2 cup pure maple syrup
  • 1 tablespoon maple extract (optional)
  • 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour (spooned and leveled)

Crisp Topping

  • 1 1/3 cups old fashioned rolled oats
  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour (spooned and leveled)
  • 1 cup packed brown sugar
  • 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • 3/4 cup unsalted butter (cold and cubed)

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven and Prepare Pan: Preheat your oven to 375°F and generously grease a 13×9 inch baking pan with butter to prevent sticking.
  2. Prepare Apples: Peel and slice the apples into 1/8 to 1/4 inch slices. In a large bowl, combine the sliced apples with maple syrup, maple extract (if using), cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, salt, and 1/4 cup of flour. Toss well until the apples are evenly coated with the spiced mixture.
  3. Assemble Apple Layer: Transfer the seasoned apples into the greased baking dish, spreading them out evenly to form the base layer.
  4. Mix Crisp Topping: In a separate bowl, whisk together the rolled oats, 1 1/2 cups flour, brown sugar, and cinnamon. Incorporate the cold, cubed butter by cutting it into the mixture with a pastry cutter or your hands until the butter is fully blended and the topping resembles coarse crumbs without large chunks.
  5. Top Apples: Evenly spread the crisp topping mixture over the apple layer in the baking dish, covering the apples thoroughly.
  6. Bake: Place the dish in the oven and bake at 375°F for 10 minutes. Without opening the oven door, reduce the temperature to 350°F and bake for another 33 to 35 minutes, or until the topping is light golden brown and the apple filling is bubbling.
  7. Cool and Serve: Remove from oven and let cool in the pan for 20 minutes. Serve warm or at room temperature. For an extra indulgence, top with vanilla ice cream before serving.
  8. Storage: Store any leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator to maintain freshness.

Notes

  • You can substitute butter with a vegan alternative to make this recipe dairy-free.
  • The combination of sweet and tart apples balances the flavors perfectly; feel free to adjust apple types based on preference.
  • If maple extract is unavailable, you can omit it as maple syrup alone contributes plenty of flavor.
  • Use cold butter to achieve a crumbly topping texture.
  • This crisp tastes great warm or cold and pairs beautifully with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream.
