Ingredients

Hamburger Steaks

  • 1.3 pounds ground beef
  • 4 tbsp breadcrumbs
  • 1 yellow onion (grated)
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp black pepper
  • 2 tbsp heavy cream
  • 1 egg

Sauce

  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 tbsp unsalted butter
  • 1 yellow onion (diced)
  • 2 garlic cloves (minced)
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp black pepper
  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • ½ cup low sodium chicken broth
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 2 tbsp chopped dill (plus more for serving)

Instructions

  1. Prepping: Grate one yellow onion into a large bowl. Add the ground beef, breadcrumbs, salt, black pepper, heavy cream, and egg. Mix with your hands just until combined. Divide the mixture into 4 equal portions and shape each into a ball. Flatten each ball with the palm of your hand or a spatula until it reaches about ¾ inch (2 cm) thickness. Set aside.
  2. Chopping: Finely dice the second yellow onion, mince the garlic cloves, and chop the fresh dill. Set these aside for the sauce preparation.
  3. Searing: Heat olive oil and unsalted butter in a large nonstick skillet over medium heat. Add the hamburger steaks and cook for 4-5 minutes on each side until nicely browned. Transfer the cooked steaks to a clean plate and set aside.
  4. Cooking the Sauce: In the same skillet, add the minced garlic and diced onion. Reduce heat to low and sauté until fragrant, about 2 minutes. Stir in salt, black pepper, and all-purpose flour until the flour is fully incorporated.
  5. Simmering the Sauce: Pour in the low sodium chicken broth while scraping the bottom of the skillet to loosen any browned bits. Let it simmer for 2 minutes to slightly thicken.
  6. Finishing the Sauce: Add the heavy cream and chopped dill. Bring the sauce to a boil and then reduce to a simmer for 1-2 minutes until it starts to thicken.
  7. Combining and Heating Through: Return the hamburger steaks to the skillet and simmer gently for 5-6 minutes until the patties are heated through and no longer raw inside.
  8. Serving: Finish by sprinkling additional fresh chopped dill and freshly grated black pepper over the steaks. Serve warm and enjoy!

Notes

  • If you prefer a thicker sauce, allow it to simmer a bit longer before adding the steaks back in.
  • Use low sodium chicken broth to better control the saltiness of the dish.
  • For a lighter version, substitute heavy cream with half-and-half or milk, but note the sauce will be less rich.
  • Ground turkey or chicken can be used as a substitute for ground beef for a leaner option.
