Delicious and fun French Toast Waffle Sticks made by dipping bread in a cinnamon-sugar egg mixture, cooking in a waffle iron until golden and crispy, then cut into sticks. Perfect for dipping in maple syrup and serving as a breakfast treat or snack.

Ingredients

Dry Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 2 teaspoons cinnamon
  • 8 slices bread (1/21 inch thick, such as white, whole wheat, challah, brioche, or sourdough)

Wet Ingredients

  • 2 large eggs
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

For Serving

  • Maple syrup, for dipping
  • Non-stick cooking spray, for waffle iron

Instructions

  1. Preheat Waffle Iron: Preheat your waffle iron according to the manufacturer’s instructions to ensure it reaches the necessary temperature for cooking the French toast sticks.
  2. Prepare Cinnamon-Sugar Mixture: In a small bowl, combine the granulated sugar and cinnamon, then set aside for later use.
  3. Make Egg Mixture: In a medium bowl, whisk the eggs until they are light and frothy. Add the milk, vanilla extract, and 1 teaspoon of the prepared cinnamon-sugar mixture, beating until fully combined. Pour this mixture into a shallow baking dish for easy dipping.
  4. Dip Bread Slices: Working in batches that fit your waffle iron, quickly dip each slice of bread into the egg mixture, coating both sides without soaking it thoroughly to prevent breakage. Denser breads can be soaked longer, but extra egg mixture may be needed.
  5. Cook in Waffle Iron: Spray the waffle iron with non-stick cooking spray. Place the dipped bread slices into the waffle iron, close the lid, and cook for 3-5 minutes or until the French toast sticks are golden brown and crispy on the outside.
  6. Cut and Serve: Immediately transfer the cooked French toast to a cutting board, sprinkle with the remaining cinnamon-sugar mixture, cut into sticks, and serve warm with maple syrup for dipping.

Notes

  • Use day-old bread for best results as it holds up better when dipped in the egg mixture.
  • Adjust cooking time depending on your waffle iron’s heat intensity and bread thickness.
  • For a richer flavor, try brioche or challah bread.
  • You can add a pinch of salt to the egg mixture to balance sweetness, if desired.
  • French toast sticks are best served immediately for optimal crispness.
