Ingredients

Sliders

  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened
  • 12-count package Hawaiian sweet dinner rolls
  • 1 pound deli roast beef
  • 12 slices provolone cheese, divided
  • 1 1/2 cups crispy fried onions (optional)

Butter Topping

  • 8 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1 packet au jus gravy mix
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tablespoon sesame seeds
  • 3/4 teaspoon dried minced garlic
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder

Instructions

  1. Prepare Oven and Pan: Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Spread 2 tablespoons of softened butter over a 9×13-inch baking pan, then line it with parchment paper to prevent sticking.
  2. Cut Rolls: Using a serrated bread knife, slice the entire block of Hawaiian rolls horizontally in half, keeping all rolls attached as one sheet. Place the bottom half of the rolls in the prepared pan.
  3. Assemble Sliders: Layer 6 slices of provolone cheese evenly over the bottom rolls, followed by the deli roast beef, then the crispy fried onions if using, and top with the remaining 6 slices of cheese. Place the top half of the rolls back on.
  4. Make Butter Topping: Melt 8 tablespoons of butter in a microwave-safe bowl. Add 1 tablespoon of au jus gravy mix, Worcestershire sauce, sesame seeds, dried minced garlic, and onion powder to the melted butter. Whisk until fully combined.
  5. Brush Butter Mixture: Spread about three-quarters of the butter mixture evenly over the tops and sides of the rolls. Reserve the remaining mixture for making au jus later or for other uses.
  6. Bake Sliders: Bake the sliders uncovered in the preheated oven until the cheese is melted and gooey and the tops of the rolls are golden brown, about 15 to 20 minutes.
  7. Prepare Au Jus: While the sliders bake, heat the remaining au jus gravy mix packet in a small saucepan with the amount of cold water indicated on the package. Whisk to combine, bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer until slightly thickened.
  8. Serve: Once baked, remove the sliders from the oven and cut along the roll divisions into individual squares using a sharp knife. Serve warm with au jus dipping sauce on the side.

Notes

  • For best results, use fresh Hawaiian sweet dinner rolls for a soft, slightly sweet base.
  • If crispy fried onions are not available, you can omit them for a simpler version or substitute with caramelized onions for a different flavor.
  • Reserve leftover butter mixture to brush on steak or other breads for added flavor.
  • Use sharp provolone cheese slices for optimal melting and flavor.
  • Handle the rolls carefully when slicing to keep them intact for easier assembly and cutting after baking.
