A classic, make-ahead cranberry sauce that perfectly complements your Thanksgiving dinner. This simple recipe uses fresh or frozen cranberries simmered with sugar and water, bursting with tangy and sweet flavors. Optional mix-ins like pecans, orange zest, and warm spices add a festive touch.

Ingredients

Main Ingredients

  • 1 cup (200g) sugar
  • 1 cup (250ml) water
  • 4 cups (one 12-ounce package) fresh or frozen cranberries

Optional Mix-ins

  • 1/2 cup chopped pecans
  • Pinch or two of orange zest
  • Raisins, currants, or blueberries (to taste)
  • Cinnamon (start with a pinch)
  • Nutmeg (start with a pinch)
  • Allspice (start with a pinch)

Instructions

  1. Rinse the cranberries: Place the cranberries in a colander and rinse them thoroughly. Remove and discard any damaged or bruised cranberries to ensure the best flavor and texture.
  2. Boil the water with sugar: In a medium saucepan, combine the water and sugar. Heat over high until the mixture reaches a boil, stirring occasionally to dissolve the sugar completely.
  3. Add the cranberries, cook until they burst: Add the cranberries to the boiling sugar-water mixture. Bring back to a boil, then reduce the heat to a simmer. Cook for about 10 minutes until most of the cranberries have popped and the sauce has thickened.
  4. Stir in the mix-ins, if using: After the cranberries have burst, enhance your sauce by stirring in any optional ingredients such as chopped pecans, orange zest, dried fruits like raisins or currants, or a pinch of warm spices like cinnamon, nutmeg, or allspice. Adjust additions to taste.
  5. Cool: Remove the saucepan from heat and allow the cranberry sauce to cool completely at room temperature. Then transfer it to a bowl and chill in the refrigerator. The sauce will continue to thicken as it cools.
  6. Enjoy: Serve chilled or at room temperature alongside your Thanksgiving feast or any meal that calls for a bright, tangy sauce.

Notes

  • For a citrus twist, substitute half the water with orange juice to elevate the orange flavor in the sauce.
  • You can reduce the sugar amount to suit your taste, starting with half and adjusting as needed. If reducing sugar, also reduce the water quantity to maintain sauce consistency.
  • The cranberry sauce thickens more as it cools, so don’t worry if it seems a bit runny when hot.
  • Use fresh or frozen cranberries depending on availability; the recipe works well with either.
