These homemade Apple Turnovers feature a flaky puff pastry crust filled with a sweet and spiced apple mixture. Perfectly golden and brushed with a cinnamon-sugar butter topping, they make a delicious dessert or snack served warm, optionally with vanilla ice cream.

Ingredients

Apple Filling

  • 1/3 cup sugar
  • 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 4 cups chopped peeled apples

Pastry

  • 1 package (17.3 ounces) frozen puff pastry, thawed

Topping

  • 3 tablespoons butter, melted
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • Vanilla ice cream, optional (for serving)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the apple filling: In a large bowl, stir together sugar, flour, and cinnamon. Add the chopped apples and toss to coat thoroughly. Set the bowl aside for a few minutes to allow the sugar to draw out moisture from the apples.
  2. Preheat the oven: Set your oven temperature to 400°F (200°C) and allow it to fully heat while you prepare the turnovers.
  3. Cut the dough into squares: On a lightly floured surface, roll out each sheet of thawed puff pastry into a 12-inch square. Then cut each sheet into four equal squares.
  4. Fill the turnovers: Give the apple mixture a good stir to incorporate any juices collected at the bottom. Spoon approximately 1/2 cup of the apple filling onto the center of each pastry square. Fold each square diagonally in half to form a triangle and press the edges firmly to seal, using a fork to crimp the edges for a tight seal.
  5. Arrange on baking sheet: Place the filled turnovers on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper to prevent sticking and ensure even baking.
  6. Apply topping: In a small bowl, combine the melted butter, sugar, and ground cinnamon. Brush this mixture evenly over the tops of each turnover to give them a beautiful golden finish and added flavor.
  7. Bake the turnovers: Bake in the preheated oven for 12 to 16 minutes or until turnovers are puffed and golden brown.
  8. Serve: Remove from oven and allow to cool slightly. Serve warm, optionally with a scoop of vanilla ice cream for a decadent treat.

Notes

  • Set the apple mixture aside to macerate briefly; this helps the filling become juicy and flavorful.
  • Be sure to thoroughly seal the turnovers to prevent filling leakage during baking.
  • Use parchment paper on the baking sheet to avoid sticking and facilitate easy cleanup.
  • Vanilla ice cream is not mandatory but adds a creamy contrast to the warm turnovers.
  • For a crisper pastry, bake immediately after assembling. If needed, turnovers can be refrigerated briefly before baking.
