This homemade Apple Granola is a deliciously crunchy and flavorful breakfast or snack option featuring rolled oats, walnuts, and sweet diced honeycrisp apple, all perfectly spiced with cinnamon and apple pie spice. Sweetened naturally with maple syrup and baked to golden perfection, this granola crisps up as it cools, making it an ideal healthy treat for any time of day.

Ingredients

Dry Ingredients

  • 3 cups old-fashioned rolled oats
  • 1 cup chopped walnuts
  • 1 apple, peeled and diced small (honeycrisp recommended)
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon apple pie spice
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt (Himalayan sea salt preferred)

Wet Ingredients

  • 1/4 cup (1/2 stick) unsalted butter, melted (can use salted butter if preferred)
  • 1/4 cup maple syrup (or honey)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven: Set your oven to 325°F (163°C) and line a large baking sheet with parchment paper to prevent sticking and ensure even baking.
  2. Combine dry ingredients: In a large mixing bowl, mix together the rolled oats, chopped walnuts, peeled and diced apple, ground cinnamon, apple pie spice, and salt until evenly distributed.
  3. Mix wet ingredients: In a separate smaller bowl, whisk the melted unsalted butter, maple syrup, and vanilla extract together until fully blended to create the wet mixture.
  4. Combine wet and dry: Pour the wet mixture over the oat mixture, stirring thoroughly to coat all dry ingredients evenly with the buttery syrup.
  5. Spread and bake: Evenly spread the granola mixture onto the prepared baking sheet in a thin, uniform layer for thorough and consistent baking.
  6. Bake and stir: Place the baking sheet on the middle oven rack and bake for 25 to 30 minutes, stirring the granola once halfway through to allow even toasting and prevent burning. Bake until golden brown and aromatic.
  7. Cool completely: Remove the granola from the oven and let it cool fully on the baking sheet. It will crisp up as it cools, forming crunchy clusters.
  8. Store and serve: Break the cooled granola into clusters and store in an airtight container to keep fresh. Enjoy it as a topping for yogurt, with milk, or as a snack on its own.

Notes

  • You can substitute honey for the maple syrup if preferred.
  • Using salted butter is acceptable, but adjust added salt accordingly to prevent it from becoming too salty.
  • Ensure the granola is completely cooled before storing to maintain crispiness.
  • Feel free to add other nuts or dried fruits based on personal preference.
