Ingredients

Ground Beef Mixture

  • 1 lb ground beef (80–90% lean)
  • 1 (1 oz) packet dry onion soup mix

Crescent Roll Crust and Cheese

  • 2 (8 oz each) cans refrigerated crescent roll dough
  • 2 cups shredded mild or medium cheddar cheese

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven and Prepare Dish: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Lightly grease a 9×13-inch glass baking dish to prevent sticking.
  2. Cook Ground Beef: In a large skillet over medium heat, add the ground beef. Cook, breaking it up with a spoon, until browned and no pink remains, about 7–10 minutes. Drain excess grease safely into a heatproof container.
  3. Season Beef: Sprinkle the dry onion soup mix evenly over the hot cooked beef. Stir well until fully combined and beef is coated. Remove from heat and let cool slightly.
  4. Form Bottom Crust: Open one can of crescent roll dough and unroll it. Press gently into the bottom of the greased baking dish, pinching seams to create a solid crust covering the entire base.
  5. Add Beef Layer: Spread the seasoned ground beef evenly over the crescent crust, reaching the edges and corners for full coverage.
  6. Layer Cheese: Sprinkle the shredded cheddar cheese evenly over the beef layer, covering from edge to edge.
  7. Prepare Top Crust: Open the second crescent roll dough can and unroll it on a lightly floured surface. Press seams together to form one sheet. Carefully lift and lay it over the cheese layer, stretching to cover the top. Press edges to seal where possible.
  8. Bake: Place the dish in the preheated oven and bake for 20–25 minutes until the crescent crust is puffed, golden brown, and cheese is bubbling around edges.
  9. Cool and Serve: Remove from oven and cool for at least 10 minutes to allow layers to set. Cut into squares with a sharp knife or spatula and serve warm.

Notes

  • Use a sturdy spatula to serve so squares hold shape.
  • Let the bake rest before cutting to prevent cheese from oozing excessively.
  • Serve with sour cream, pickles, or simple summer sides like salad, coleslaw, or corn on the cob.
  • Drain ground beef thoroughly to avoid greasy casserole.
  • This dish can be prepared ahead and baked just before serving.
