A quick and delicious Honey Garlic Shrimp recipe that takes just 10 minutes to prepare and cook. Tender shrimp are coated with a light soy and cornstarch mixture for a velveting effect, then stir-fried with fresh garlic, ginger, and a sweet honey glaze. Perfect for a flavorful weeknight dinner or a tasty appetizer served over rice.

Ingredients

Shrimp Marinade

  • 450g / 1lb shrimp (peeled and deveined)
  • 1 tbsp light soy sauce
  • 1 tbsp cornstarch

Cooking

  • 2 tbsp vegetable oil
  • 34 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tbsp ginger paste or grated ginger
  • 4 tbsp honey
  • 1/4 tsp chilli flakes (optional)

Garnish

  • 2 green onions, sliced

Instructions

  1. Marinate the shrimp: In a medium bowl, combine the soy sauce and cornstarch. Add the peeled and deveined shrimp and toss well to coat evenly. Set aside to let the shrimp absorb the marinade. This velveting technique helps protect the shrimp from drying out during cooking.
  2. Cook aromatics: Heat the vegetable oil in a non-stick frying pan over medium heat. Add the minced garlic and ginger and sauté for no longer than 30 seconds until fragrant, being careful not to burn the garlic.
  3. Cook the shrimp: Add the marinated shrimp to the pan and cook for 1-2 minutes on each side, depending on shrimp size, until they turn pink and are cooked through.
  4. Add honey and chilli: Pour the honey into the pan along with the optional chilli flakes. Toss everything together to coat the shrimp in the sweet and spicy sauce, then immediately remove the pan from heat to avoid overcooking.
  5. Garnish and serve: Sprinkle the sliced green onions over the shrimp for a fresh garnish. Serve hot as a delicious appetizer or over steamed rice for a satisfying main dish.

Notes

  • Velveting with soy sauce and cornstarch keeps shrimp tender and juicy.
  • Adjust chilli flakes to your taste or omit for a milder flavor.
  • Serve with steamed jasmine rice or noodles to complement the honey garlic sauce.
  • Use fresh garlic and ginger for the best aroma and flavor.
  • Do not overcook shrimp to avoid rubbery texture; they cook quickly in this recipe.
