Ingredients
1 lb. ground beef
6 slices rye bread
½ tsp. onion powder
½ tsp. garlic powder
Salt and pepper to taste
6 slices cheddar cheese
6 slices provolone cheese
6 tbsp. unsalted butter, softened
¼ cup mayonnaise
3 tbsp. ketchup
1 tsp. sugar
1 tsp. relish
Instructions
Prepare the Secret Sauce: In a small bowl, combine mayonnaise, ketchup, sugar, and relish. Mix until well incorporated. Set aside.
Cook the Patties: Shape the ground beef into 3 patties, slightly larger than your bread slices. Season with onion powder, garlic powder, salt, and pepper. Heat a skillet over medium-high heat and cook the patties for 4-5 minutes per side until browned and cooked through. Remove from skillet and set aside.
Assemble the Sandwiches: Butter one side of each bread slice. Place three slices buttered-side down in the skillet. Layer each with a slice of provolone cheese, a beef patty, a slice of cheddar cheese, and a generous amount of secret sauce. Top with another slice of bread, buttered-side up.
Grill the Sandwiches: Cook until the bread is golden brown and the cheese is melted, about 3-4 minutes per side. Remove from skillet and let rest for a minute before serving.
Notes
For a spicier secret sauce, add a teaspoon of sriracha or a pinch of cayenne pepper.
Ground turkey can be used as a leaner alternative to beef.
Caramelizing the onions adds sweetness, but sautéing them until soft works too.
The secret sauce can be made up to 3 days in advance and stored in the refrigerator.
For a different texture, try using sourdough or Texas toast instead of rye bread.
