Ingredients

Irish Soda Bread Ingredients

  • 4 cups of flour
  • 1 and 1/4 cups buttermilk
  • 4 Tbsp. sugar
  • 1 Tbsp. baking powder
  • 1 tsp. baking soda
  • 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 1/2 cup softened butter (one stick) – salted
  • 1 egg

Glaze

  • 1/4 cup salted butter, melted
  • 1/4 cup buttermilk

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 375 degrees.
  2. Mix together the dry ingredients: Flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Use a whisk to ensure thorough mixing.

  3. Add in the wet ingredients:
  4. Pour in the buttermilk, butter, and egg. Use a hand mixer to combine everything well.

  5. Knead the dough:
  6. Turn out the dough onto a floured surface and knead for about 10 minutes until it reaches a Playdough-like consistency. Dust with flour as needed.

  7. Shape the dough:
  8. Form the dough into a loaf shape and place it on a cookie sheet lined with parchment paper to prevent overcooking the bottom.

  9. Cut an X into the top of the dough:
  10. This helps the dough cook evenly.

  11. Bake the bread:
  12. Bake for 15 minutes.

  13. Make the glaze:
  14. Melt the butter and mix with buttermilk. Brush the glaze over the bread.

  15. Return to the oven:
  16. Bake for another 15 minutes, then glaze again, and bake for a final 15 minutes. Check for doneness with a toothpick.

  17. Rest and serve:
  18. Let the bread rest before serving with butter, jam, or alongside a stew or soup.
