These soft, sweet Homemade Honey Buns have the same melt-in-your-mouth texture that you love from store-bought honey buns! Sticky and sweet with a cinnamon sugar filling, and creamy homemade glaze.

Ingredients

For the Dough:

  • 3 cups all-purpose flour, plus more for rolling
  • 3 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon instant yeast
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ½ cup warm water, between 105°F-115°F
  • ⅓ cup honey
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • ¼ cup shortening, melted
  • Vegetable or peanut oil, for frying

For the Cinnamon Sugar:

  • ¼ cup granulated sugar
  • 1 ½ teaspoon cinnamon

For the Glaze:

  • 4 ⅔ cup powdered sugar
  • 2 ½ tablespoons honey
  • 1 tablespoon melted butter
  • ½ teaspoon vanilla extract
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • Warm water, as needed

Instructions

  1. Whisk together the dry ingredients: Combine flour, sugar, yeast, and salt. Set aside.
  2. Prepare the wet ingredients: Mix warm water, honey, egg, and vanilla. Add melted shortening and combine.
  3. Combine wet and dry ingredients: With a stand mixer and dough hook, mix until well combined. Knead for 8 minutes.
  4. Rise the dough: Place dough in an oiled bowl, cover, and let rise for 1-2 hours.
  5. Prepare cinnamon sugar: Mix sugar and cinnamon. Set aside.
  6. Roll out the dough: Shape dough, add cinnamon sugar, roll up, and cut into pieces.
  7. Rise the buns: Let the buns rise for about 45 minutes.
  8. Fry or bake: Fry in oil until golden brown or bake in the oven.
  9. Glaze: Dip each bun in the glaze.
  10. Serve: Enjoy your homemade honey buns!
