Ingredients

Slider Ingredients

  • 3 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1 medium onion, thinly sliced
  • 2 teaspoons fresh thyme, minced
  • 1/4 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 12 sweet rolls
  • 10 slices provolone cheese
  • 14 ounces sliced deli roast beef

Butter Sauce

  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons dried onion soup mix

Au Jus Dip

  • 1 packet au jus gravy mix
  • 3 cups water

Garnish

  • Fresh chopped parsley (optional)

Instructions

  1. Caramelize Onions: In a large skillet over medium heat, melt 3 tablespoons of unsalted butter. Add the thinly sliced onion, stirring occasionally, and cook for 12-15 minutes until soft and browned but not burnt. Add minced fresh thyme, kosher salt, and black pepper; stir to combine. Remove from heat and set aside.
  2. Prepare Oven and Rolls: Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Remove the sweet rolls from the package, keeping them intact. Carefully slice the rolls horizontally to separate tops from bottoms.
  3. Assemble Sliders: Place the roll bottoms cut side up into an 11×7-inch baking dish. Layer half of the provolone cheese slices over the bottoms. Next, add the sliced deli roast beef evenly, followed by spreading the caramelized onions on top. Layer the remaining provolone cheese slices, then place the roll tops over everything.
  4. Apply Butter Mixture: In a small bowl, mix the melted butter and dried onion soup mix together. Brush this mixture evenly over the tops of the rolls to ensure full coverage.
  5. Bake Sliders: Cover the baking dish loosely with foil, making sure the foil does not touch the rolls. Bake for 25 minutes. Then remove the foil and bake for an additional 5 minutes to brown the tops and create a slightly crisp finish.
  6. Prepare Au Jus: While the sliders bake, prepare the au jus dip by combining the packet of au jus gravy mix with 3 cups of water, following package instructions to cook and thicken.
  7. Serve: Remove the sliders from the oven and garnish with fresh chopped parsley if desired. Serve hot with the warm au jus on the side for dipping. Enjoy your delicious French Dip Sliders!

Notes

  • Make sure not to burn the onions while caramelizing; cook on medium heat and stir frequently.
  • Brushing the butter-onion soup mixture over the rolls helps develop a flavorful crust but pouring is an option if preferred.
  • Using sweet rolls adds a subtle sweetness that complements the savory roast beef and cheese.
  • Au jus adds moisture and enhances the classic French Dip flavor experience.
  • These sliders can be made ahead and baked just before serving for convenience.
