This easy Dutch oven bread recipe produces a crusty bread with an airy soft interior, perfect for enjoying fresh homemade bread. Simply let the dough rest overnight and bake in the morning.

Ingredients

For the Bread:

  • 1½ cups warm water (105°F)
  • 2 teaspoons active dry yeast
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1½ teaspoons sea salt
  • ½ cup shredded parmesan cheese

Optional Ingredients:

  • Italian seasonings
  • rosemary
  • roasted garlic
  • fresh herbs

For Coating:

  • ¼ cup flour (for cutting board)

Instructions

  1. Prepare Yeast Mixture: In a small mixing bowl, combine warm water and active dry yeast. Let sit for 10 to 15 minutes.
  2. Mix Dry Ingredients: In a large mixing bowl, combine flour, salt, and parmesan cheese.
  3. Combine and Rest Dough: Pour yeast/water mixture into the dry ingredients and mix. Cover tightly with plastic wrap and let sit at room temperature for 18 to 24 hours.
  4. Preheat and Shape: Preheat the oven to 450°F. Shape the dough into a ball on a floured cutting board.
  5. Bake: Place dough in a preheated dutch oven, cover, and bake for 30 minutes. Remove the lid and bake for an additional 15 minutes until golden and crusty.
  6. Cool and Serve: Allow the bread to cool, then slice and serve.

Notes

  • Use warm water (105°F) to activate the yeast properly.
  • A regular-sized dutch oven can be used for a flatter result.
  • Handle the dough gently to shape it into a ball.
  • Preheating the dutch oven prevents sticking.
