Apple crisp is a comforting dessert featuring tender, spiced apples and a buttery, crunchy topping. Easy to make and perfect for any occasion, it’s ready in just over an hour.

Ingredients

For the Apple Filling

  • 10 cups Granny Smith apples (peeled, cored and sliced into inch thick slices then cut the slices in half)
  • ½ cup light brown sugar, tightly packed
  • ⅓ cup all-purpose flour
  • ¼ cup granulated sugar
  • 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • ½ teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

For the Crisp Topping

  • 1 ⅓ cups quick cooking oats
  • 1 ⅓ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup light brown sugar, tightly packed
  • 1 ½ teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon baking powder
  • ¾ cup unsalted butter, melted

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven: Preheat oven to 350°F. Lightly spray a 9×13 baking dish with non-stick baker’s spray. Set aside.
  2. Mix apple filling: To a large mixing bowl, combine apple slices, sugars, flour, spices, and vanilla. Spread into baking dish.
  3. Prepare crisp topping: In a bowl, mix oats, flour, sugar, cinnamon, salt, and baking powder. Add melted butter and stir until combined.
  4. Top and bake: Sprinkle crisp topping over apples. Bake for 40-45 minutes until golden brown and bubbly.
  5. Cool and serve: Let the apple crisp cool for 5 minutes before serving.

Notes

  • Chill the Butter: For a crispier topping, use cold butter instead of melted.
  • Prevent Browning: Toss apple slices with lemon juice to prevent browning.
  • Check for Doneness: Apples should be tender but not mushy.
  • Avoid Overmixing: Mix topping until moistened, do not overmix.
  • Add Liquid: Add a splash of apple juice or water if apples are dry.
  • Use a Baking Sheet: Place the dish on a lined baking sheet for easy cleanup.
  • Let it Cool: Allow apple crisp to cool for at least 10 minutes after baking.
  • Check Oven Temperature: Use an oven thermometer for accurate baking.
