These 1-Hour Soft and Buttery Dinner Rolls are the perfect addition to any meal, offering a tender crumb and a rich buttery flavor. Ready in just one hour, these rolls are easy to make with simple ingredients, using a quick yeast activation and short rise time to produce fluffy, golden-brown bread that melts in your mouth.

Ingredients

Wet Ingredients

  • 1 cup water
  • 2 tablespoons melted butter, plus extra for brushing
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 2 tablespoons honey

Dry Ingredients

  • 1 tablespoon active-dry yeast
  • 3 1/2 to 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon fine sea salt

Instructions

  1. Prep your oven and baking dish: Preheat your oven to 400°F (204°C). Grease a 9 x 13-inch baking dish with cooking spray and set aside.
  2. Heat the liquids: In a microwave-safe bowl or saucepan, combine water, melted butter, milk, and honey. Microwave for 1 minute, stir, then continue microwaving in 15-second intervals until the mixture reaches 110°F (warm to the touch but not hot). Alternatively, gently heat on the stove over medium-low heat to the same temperature.
  3. Add yeast: Pour the warm liquid into the bowl of a stand mixer. Sprinkle yeast evenly over the top, stir lightly with a fork, and allow it to activate for 5 minutes until foamy.
  4. Add dry ingredients: Add 3 1/2 cups of flour and salt to the yeast mixture.
  5. Mix the dough: Using a dough hook on medium-low speed, mix until combined. Add flour 1/4 cup at a time as needed until the dough pulls away from the bowl sides but remains slightly sticky, using up to 4 cups total. Continue mixing on low speed for 4-5 minutes until smooth. Form the dough into a ball, then transfer it to a greased bowl.
  6. Let the dough rise: Cover the bowl with a damp towel and let the dough rise for 15 minutes in a warm place.
  7. Form the rolls: Gently punch down the dough and divide it into 15 equal pieces. Shape each piece into a ball and place them in the prepared baking dish. Cover with a damp towel and let them rise again for 15-20 minutes.
  8. Bake: Remove the towel and bake the rolls for 15 minutes until golden brown and fully cooked.
  9. Brush with butter: Transfer the baking dish to a wire rack and brush the tops of the rolls with melted butter for a soft, shiny finish.
  10. Serve warm: Serve the rolls warm and enjoy their soft, buttery goodness.

Notes

  • You can knead the dough by hand instead of using a mixer by gradually incorporating the flour and kneading on a floured surface until smooth and elastic.
  • Ensure the liquid temperature is accurately 110°F; too hot can kill the yeast, too cold will slow activation.
  • These rolls are best served the day they are baked but can be stored in an airtight container for up to two days; reheat gently before serving.
  • For a richer flavor, try brushing the tops with garlic butter or sprinkling with herbs before baking.
